Warm/Cool Pass
Complete clarity about which colors go where
The foundational warm-cool pass was filmed real-time (over two and a half hours) and fully narrated, showing both the painting and palette. Because of the way I set up my palette in a numbered grid, in addition to seeing every brushstroke, you will be able to identify the VALUE and CHROMA of the paint I am choosing for each brushstroke. (I often narrate this out loud as well for clarity). As I paint, I discuss skin tones, some anatomy & structure of the eye, and the effects of light on form.
Reference Images
No more guesswork with my unique “Heatmap” technique
This demo is a study inspired by William Bouguereau’s 19th-century painting “Girl with a Pomegranate.” I include a cropped image of the eye from the Bouguereau painting I referenced if you would like to follow along and do your own study. I also include a color-coded value map of the eye (something I developed that I call a "HEATMAP" to help us more quickly identify the light and dark tonal values at a glance).
Bonus: Mixing the Palette
Pare down to the essential colors to portray flesh
Eliminate decision fatigue: simplify your palette down to only THREE colors for skin tones. This bonus is about an hour of video that will walk you through MIXING a very basic Warm/Cool palette: first the grays and then the warmer mixtures. You can then mix in between to create more steps— either before painting like I do, or just with the brush as you paint.
